Making/Editing a Highlight Film

All you need is a video camera , the right software and a desire to create a film.

Start by Getting Game, Practice or Showcase Footage

In sports like basketball, football and volleyball it is common place for high schools to film their games, scrimmages and even practices. Asks your head coach for copies of your best film. (The ideal situation is when the coaching staff creates a highlight film their players.) If your high school doesn't have quality films calls your opponents and ask to buy their film; sometimes they'll give or loan it to you. If your school does not film you will have to do it yourself or hire someone.

Making/Editing a Highlight Film

If you've thought about making and editing your own highlight film on your computer, but haven't gotten started either because you didn't know where to start, or because it seemed WAY too complicated, then this information is for you! General Video Questions and Uploading Videos to MyGameFilm.com

How do I upload a video?

Once you've finished preparing your video, make sure it's less than 3 minutes in length, smaller than 30MB, and in an acceptable computer format, you're ready to upload it. Remember, you must be a registered user of MyGameFilm.com to upload a video.

  1. Login to the system with your username and password.
  2. Once you are on the "PROFILE MENU" page you will see an "UPLOAD" button.
  3. Click "UPLOAD" and follow the instructions there to complete the process.
  4. Uploading can be a slow process depending on your connection speed.
  5. Upon completion, you will be able to view your video to see if it meets your standards, if not you can replace it at any time with a newly prepared video. Remember your video is selling you to the Coach

How long/large can my Highlight Film be?

MyGameFilm.com requires a maximum length of a highlight film to be under three (3) minutes approximately 30 MB.

What video file formats can I upload?

My Game Film accepts video files from most digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones in the .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG file formats. Flash video (.FLV like the files on YouTube) is also accepted and is the fastest to display on the viewer's computer.

What is a .MOV file?

Files with a .MOV extension are QuickTime movies. They are often created by iMovie on a Mac, but other video editing programs can also save in this format. QuickTime .mov files can be uploaded to My Game Film without any additional conversion. It does, however, require the viewer have Quicktine loaded on their computer. This is not standard on a PC, but common.

What is a .MPG file?

Files with a .MP4 extension or MPEG are Moving Picture Experts Group file standards and are typically acceptable for upload to MyGameFilm.com. This format is used by several digital cameras when video is recorded.

MPEG-1: Initial video and audio compression standard. Later used as the standard for Video CD , and includes the popular Layer 3 ( MP3 ) audio compression format.
MPEG-2: Transport, video and audio standards for broadcast-quality television. Used for over-the-air digital television, digital satellite TV services like Dish Network, digital cable television signals.
MPEG-3: Originally designed for HDTV , but abandoned when it was discovered that MPEG-2 (with extensions) was sufficient for HDTV. (not to be confused with MP3 , which is MPEG-1 Layer 3.)
MPEG-4: Expands MPEG-1 to support video/audio "objects", 3D content, low bitrate encoding and support for Digital Rights Management.

What is a .AVI file?

Files with a .AVI are Audio Video Interleave, is a multimedia container format introduced by Microsoft in November 1992 as part of its Video for Windows technology. AVI files can contain both audio and video data in a standard container that allows synchronous audio-with-video playback. .AVI files can typically be uploaded to MyGameFilm.com without any additional conversion.

What is a .WMV file?

Files with a .WMV are Windows Media Video and indicates a file using a video technology developed by Microsoft. It is part of the Microsoft Windows Media framework. .WMV files can be uploaded to My Game Film without any additional conversion. This format will always run on a PC, although buffering time may be long.

What is an .MSWMM file?

An .MSWMM file is a Windows Movie Maker project file. By saving the project, it allows you to return to the Highlight Film and make modifications at a later time. However, if you're satisfied with the Highlight Film and would like to upload and share the result through My Game Film, you will need to choose "Save Movie File" under the "File" menu (which is different from "Save Project", which creates the .MSWMM file). We cannot accept a .MSWMM file, only it's finished product, which is typically a .WMV file.

What's the best format for fast viewing?

We recommend the following settings:

  • FLV (Flash) format
  • 320x240 resolution or 640x480 if the movie is not too long
  • bitrate 480kbps
  • 25 frames per second
  • Audio at 48k

What's the best format to upload for high quality?

We recommend the following settings:

  • MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
  • 320x240 resolution
  • MP3 audio
  • 30 frames per second

What if my video is not in one of the acceptable computer formats ?

It's possible for you to have a video on CD or DVD or even TAPE that is in an unacceptable format. If your video isn't in one of the "standard" computer formats above, you will need to convert, and/or "RIP" it into your computer using one of the many products available for that purpose. There are also specialized companies who offer the service.

How do I edit my video?

Many computers come with some sort of video editing application already installed, such as Apple iMovie or Microsoft Movie Maker. Using these programs, you can easily edit your videos, add soundtracks, change the file type, compress the file size, etc.

There are also more advanced editing programs available for purchase or download online. We encourage you to look around and find the editing software that's right for you.
